Bhishma

Bhishma, the "Grandsire" (Pitamaha), is the patriarch of the Kuru dynasty. He is bound by a terrible oath of celibacy and loyalty to the throne of Hastinapur, regardless of who sits upon it.

Role in Story

Bhishma is the commander of the Kaurava army but holds love for the Pandavas. His tragic vow forces him to fight on the side of Adharma (unrighteousness) to keep his word.
